Katie Cakebread

Katie is a Senior Lecturer and the Course leader in addition to the module lead for SB508:Integrative Health Care Practice. Katie grew up in London and moved to Brighton and graduated from the University of Brighton as a children’s nurse. Katie worked as a neonatal nurse and a health visitor before moving into education and going full circle back to the university as a member of staff.

Mark T Lees

Mark is a Principal Lecturer and Academic Subject Group Lead for Nursing Sciences. Mark was the course leader from April 2019 until October 2021 and is due to take on the module lead for SB403:Legal and Ethical Foundations of Health and Social Care Practice. Mark has worked in healthcare for nearly thirty years – he started his career as a Nursing Assistant in General theatres before training as an adult nurse going on to work in Specialist Surgical Services in Scotland – Thoracic, Gastric, Cardiac Intensive Care and High Dependence Units. Marks’ passion was to work in the community and had the pleasure of doing this as a Community Staff Nurse. Mark then trained to be a Public Health Nurse in 2001 – working for a short time as a Health Visitor and then progressing to provide Public Health advice. Mark moved into education in 2003 – when he worked as a Practice Development Facilitator with a special interest in Community Development. He finally moved into higher education in 2011 as a lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University. Mark joined the Foundation Degree at the University of Brighton as a Senior Lecturer in October 2018

Valerie Dowley

Valerie is the module lead for SB402:Communications for Health Care Practice. Valerie professional background is very mixed. She has 37 years nursing of under her belt and also trained as a midwife. She has pecialised in surgical nursing and was a colorectal nurse specialist for 8 years. When Valerie came to the UK in 1999 she worked commercially for 5 years, as a nurse advisor with a Pressure Area Care mattress company. Her most recent role before joining the University, October 2020, was as a Tissue Viability Nurse Specialist.

Clare Morfoot

Clare is a Senior Lecturer and the module leader for the SB504:Project Planning module. Clare trained as an adult nurse in London and once qualified, worked in oncology, before specialising in neonatal nursing. Prior to joining the University in April Clare worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, as a Practice Educator.

 

Charlotte Humphris

Charlotte leads on the SB506: Practice Skills Development module. Charlotte is a Registered General Nurse (Adult) training in Hull before moving to London for 15 years working in Vascular surgery, Post-operative Recovery, Intensive Care, High Dependency, and the Emergency Department where she settled and spent most of my career. Charlotte spent time as a Specialist Nurse for Organ Donation in London and on moving to West Sussex, she became a Pain Nurse Specialist in the former Brighton and Sussex NHS trust. Charlotte’s last role before joing the University was as an Senior Educator for the Acute Floor and Emergency Department at The Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.

Edda Hensler

Edda is module leader for the SB404: Anatomy & Physiology module. Edda trained as an adult nurse in Nuremberg, Germany and worked there in adult intensive care (toxicology) before moving to London in 1997 where she worked in several ICUs including Chelsea & Westminster which was her favourite. Edda then migrated south worked at East Surrey and Crawley and then Brighton ICUs prior to moving into education, first as a Lecturer/Practitioner Clinical Skills. Edda is now a full-time Senior Lecturer at the University where teaches medicines management across several courses.

Wendy McCarthy

Wendy is a Senior Lecturer and is placement lead for the foundation degree in addition to module lead for SB503:Using evidence as a basis for practice which takes place in year 2. Wendy’s background is in adult and paediatric nursing.

Ferdinand Bravo

Ferdinand Bravo (‘Den-Den’) is a Senior Lecturer and the module leader for SB401:Work-Based Learning module. Den-Den trained and first worked as a nurse in the Philippines before a stint in the US ultimately deciding to settle here in the UK. Den-Den’s background is mainly adult nursing, particularly medical-surgical, intensive care and renal.

Simon Whiffin

Simon is Senior Lecturer and the course admissions tutor in addition to the module leader for SB405:Study Skill for Health and Social Care Practice. Simon previously worked as a family lawyer practising in the area of both public and private law children’s proceeding. After leaving law Simon completed an MSc in Information Systems before joining the University.
