The Last Five Minutes
Fine Art: Critical Practice First Year Show
University of Brighton, Grand Parade, Room 206
19th– 27thMarch 2019
This exhibition features the work of 18 Fine Art: Critical Practice students from the University of Brighton. Their work explores the idea of mortality, loss and relationships within the context of our constructed perception of time- ‘The Last Five Minutes’. Following on from the line of enquiry within our previous first year exhibition, ‘Sapien’, we will be exploring the existential human condition and experience. In the last five minutes of life, consciousness or sanity, it could be said that we reach a sense of clarity, our true priorities unveiled. The exhibition aims to convey the sense of liberation that would occur if humans had knowledge and control of their final minutes of life, as well as reflecting on the stark reality of many peoples ‘Last Five Minutes’.
The exhibition includes works such as a film of an artist disappearing into the sea, the voice of an artist’s loved one suffering from dementia, as well as various interpretations of poetry reflecting on human mortality. It is a mixed media exhibition with an emphasis on film and instillation.
All are invited to attend the opening night of ‘Five Minutes’ on the 19thMarch, 4pm-8pm, in Room 206, Grand Parade Campus, and the exhibition will be open until the 27thMarch.
