We supported Bodychillz Ltd. in testing the first proof of concept and subsequent prototype medical cooling vests. The product called the CAERvest® was tested by Dr Ash Willmott and Dr Neil Maxwell and is now routinely used during the Brighton and London marathons on runners suffering from exertional heat stroke.
The CAERvest® is a new, novel, pre-hospital device which is used to rapidly and effectively lower the core temperature of an individual suffering from heat stroke or cardiac arrest.
While in 2016 it was a hot day with temperatures exceeding 19°C at the Brighton marathon, ambient temperatures never rose above 13°C at the London Marathon. However, even in these temperatures incidents happen where the physiological strain while running a marathon combined with the ambient conditions takes its toll on runners, sometimes leading to exertional heat illnesses. The CAERvest has helped save lives during sporting and military events and is fast becoming the filed-based method of choice for rapid cooling.
