Experimental Design Practices Prize 2025

Neeve Fairholme from level 6  Interior Architecture has won the 2025 Experimental Design Practices Prize!

In collaboration with Brighton&Hove museum the project looked to decontextualise an artefact, the Hove Amber Cup, from its museum context. The amber cup was found in the grave of a high-status individual, believed to be a chieftain or nobleman, during the excavation of a burial mound or barrow in Hove Park. The cup is also made from amber, a beautiful warm material that glows when light is shined through it. In the Baltic region [the area in which the cup has been suspected to come from], amber was often associated with the divine, especially because of its connection to the sun and light. The Baltic people viewed amber, with its golden, glowing translucency, as a sacred substance imbued with mystical properties. It was believed to have come from the tears of the sun god, which gave it protective, healing, and spiritual powers. In the museum’s description of the cup none of this rich history or context is available. Therefore I focused my design on revealing such narratives via a fantasy temple and sun basking rituals with the cup as a centre-piece. I explored the idea of temples and formations via a series of experimental workshops:

  1. Initial artefact research
  2. A narration which guided a series of sketches usuing a range of mediums
  3. Collaging [both physical and digital]
  4. Perspective drawings of different mediums
  5. Rendering software experimentation [unreal engine]

I have also worked alongside technicians to setup and allow for the design to be experienced in virtual reality.

Drawing Out VII

Drawing Out VII

temporal spatial narratives of politics, sustainability, environment

Date: Wednesday 2nd April 2025

Time: 14.00-16.00 (for access meet 13.50 Cockcroft Entrance)

Location: Room 808, Cockcroft Building, University of Brighton

Map: https://www.brighton.ac.uk/about-us/contact-us/maps/brighton-maps/moulsecoomb-campus.aspx

An afternoon of conversation organised by the University of Brighton Experimental Design Practices REG as part of the UoB Research & Knowledge Exchange Week.

Presentations:

Yi Chen

Yi is presenting her work on ‘Rhythmanalysis’ which she develops as a research methodology for exploring the social aesthetics of ‘rhythm’. She proposes to apply this methodology for uncovering the rhythmic underpinning of social relations (at the level of senses and temporal spatial connections). Yi would also like to discuss ways of thinking about the ethics of ‘rhythm’ in relation to her current research on the ‘ethics of aesthetic forms’.

Yi Chen is Lecturer in the School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering (IFY). She is Senior Lecturer in Contextual and Theoretical Studies at the University of the Arts London. Her research interests include visual material culture, art and design practices, research methodology and cultural history.

Mike Bell

Mike will describe and explore with the group some tools he has developed to aid in breaking through creative blocks both in his personal drawing work and in the office for architectural projects. He will show some smart parametric and less smart ‘generator’ experiments that he uses to kickstart some of the sketches and drawings that he does too. It will be an interactive and therefore possibly chaotic presentation but what better way to loosen up the right side of the brain (is that still a thing scientifically?)

Mike Bell is a Sussex based Architect and Illustrator. Leader of FAB Architects – an innovative and experimental architecture practice, especially interested in playful, narrative driven design motifs. FAB works with families and business owners to create unique homes and spaces. In life outside of practice Mike is driven in exploring the role of creativity in the design process and imagining weird and wonderful hypothetical architectural spaces through drawing and modelling. A passionate skateboarder, he is also involved in local skate park design, community driven skateboarding facilities and understanding skateboarding’s role in the built environment.

Time: 11.00-16.30 (for access meet 10.50 Mithras House Entrance)

Location: Room 231D, Mithras House, University of Brighton

A day of conversation organised by the University of Brighton: Experimental Design Practices REG, Design for Circular Cities and Regions REG and the Bartlett, UCL. Drawing Out II led us to concerns around embodiment, phenomenology and post-phenomenology, and it is with these we will begin the discussions within Drawing Out III.

Presentations of work in progress including:

Charlotte Erckrath, Bergen School of Architecture.

Charlotte’s field of interest is the investigation of design methodologies through critical drawing practice and material exploration.

Matthew Rosier

Matthew is an artist based in London whose work mixes technology with film and sound in the form of immersive public installations.

Rodolfo Acevedo-Rodriguez

Rodolfo trained at the Bartlett School of Architecture and Cambridge, and is a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. His etching practice seeks to establish a relationship between the author and the medium.

Full programme to be announced shortly.
