I always like to use SWOT analysis while reflecting on a project, choosing a career related option or in personal situations. I created a chart for my FMP to identify what went well, what didn’t and any potential pathways the project could take in the future.
The key aspects of this project are that it’s meaningful and important with its messaging. The feminist issue is being communicated in a visually fun and colourful way, and it’s easily accessible through Instagram and my website (both free). Because of the size of the problems discussed, the project has a potential for further development. Burning issues, such as racial discrimination at work affecting women, women working in male-dominated environments (i.e. women in science), and the importance of education for young females can be explored as the project grows.
Lack of coverage for the above issues might be seen a weakness, and
I’m worrying that the content and its presentation is not designed in a way that would attract huge amounts of girls and young women to it. The project is displayed as an educational tool, and might be view by many as ‘dull’.
However, because of platform’s educational qualities, this presents an opportunity for collaboration with schools and universities as part of their career planning agendas. The content can be used as a tool to promote equal opportunities within young people and make them pay more attention to what work is available for them after leaving school. Perhaps Women’s Business Council would be interested in a collaboration as well – this could include promoting their activities and opportunities they present on the platform, or me creating graphic content for them to include in their online presence.
Even though my platform is unique for suggesting that work and careers should be part of every child’s education (rather than focusing on adult women), the feminist message can still be lost in the sea of similar content on Instagram. This would mean that results of this campaign will be much smaller than expected. Lack of funding for further development and promotion, and over-saturation of online feminist content can contribute to this. Educational content can also be ridiculed by online trolls and haters, looking for ways of disrupting female empowerment and bashing feminism all together.
That said, overall, I’m pleased with the outcome, especially visual content and choice of graphic style and colour palette. I’ve learned new and exciting techniques in Adobe Illustrator for creating drawings in a quick and effective way. I feel more proficient with this software and more confident creating comic-books in the future. I’m proud to include this project in my portfolio and I’m excited about growing the platform after graduation.
