SP4 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FILE

After university the path isn’t clear to me. In my life I’ve had a pattern where I live somewhere for a while and then move on when I feel like somewhere else is calling me. I have a few loose ideas as to what I might do which I will expand on in this page.

I am a barber by trade, so I can always fall back on that if I need to find work. My mum has just moved to Taunton in Somerset, I might go and stay with her for a few months. Whilst there I would like to set up a small Etsy business to sell handmade drawings, paintings and prints, but also set up some passive income streams such as print on demand services like Fine Art America. You upload your art work and people can buy it printed on many surfaces. I have set up an account but its still in the early stages at the moment, I might never make any money but thought it was cool. Here is a link to my shop https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/emily-wootton . Also I would like to set up some affiliate marketing to earn me money passively. I have been doing some research into an Amazon service called Amazon ADP (Amazon Direct Publishing) and you upload books you have made, and they advertise, print, pack and post the product to the customer for you. I have started to use an AI generator to create short children’s stories and the illustrations to match. I will start to load these books into Amazon ADP soon. I will also make these books into eBooks so I can sell more.

If I decide to enter into anymore education, I will be applying to Brighton, as I would like to complete everything in one place for convenience but otherwise thought that i was going to love living in Brighton, but I’ve found its too much of a city vibe for me, i much prefer a quiter town, being surrounded by nature and green. I have also been thinking about moving down to Cornwall. I used to go on holiday to Cornwall when i was a child and always loved the calm feeling i got there. I feel being close to the sea and in the countryside will create a relaxed working environment for me to make art. In Cornwall there is a printing community. I found Porthmeor Print Workshop, which is located above a gallery in St Ives. It is an open-access, non-profit printmaking studio. (www.porthmeor-print-workshop.co.uk/).  Also Cornwall is cheaper than Brighton/Worthing and where I’m from in Surrey. I would love to live on my own and not have anyone controlling my life, I want to be fully independent in order to find my higher spiritual self and create artwork that reflects that. I feel like my whole life, someone else has had the final say on what I do or I can’t do something because I have a partner. Now I need freedom.

If my ideas don’t work out for me, then I have also researched other jobs and options I could apply for. I have copied over some job adverts and additional education, so I can document what options are out there. Also an up-to-date CV. See below:

How to become a Freelance Artist:

General Job Sites for Freelancers

Upwork

Upwork primarily caters to those looking for high-quality freelance gigs in industries such as marketing, consulting, and web development. The platform uses a high-profile vetting process before creatives can start bidding on projects. It also tracks invoices, billable hours, and client communication.

Freelancer

One of the largest online marketplaces for freelancers, the aptly named Freelancer allows freelance artists to search and apply for both local and remote jobs in several fields, including design, content writing, and social media marketing. Like Upwork, the platform keeps track of your invoices, working hours, communication, and payment.

Fiverr

Fiverr is great for artists just getting started in the freelancing world. The site skews toward those in the creative/design space and has a reputation for offering low-cost gigs that can help beginners build up their portfolios. Fiverr also lets freelancers put together their own packages and offer custom services to clients.

Guru

Guru targets more seasoned professionals rather than entry-level freelancers, making it ideal for those with some freelancing experience under their belt. The platform caters to independent contractors in creative areas such as design, sales and marketing, programming, writing, and translation. Similar to Upwork, Guru users can bid on projects.

LinkedIn ProFinder

Launched by LinkedIn in 2015, LinkedIn ProFinder connects freelancers with quality leads and opportunities. The platform works well for freelancers with expertise in areas like editing, graphic design, marketing, and photography; however, you must go through an approval process to be eligible for gigs. Once approved, independent contractors will receive alerts regarding potential clients and projects.

Working Not Working

The mission of Working Not Working (WNW) is to connect talented creatives with innovative companies such as Apple, Google, Airbnb, Facebook, and Nike. WNW has built a reputation for offering both high-quality gigs and freelance-friendly features. Instead of you having to seek out potential companies, the company will come to you if it thinks you’re a good fit.

SimplyHired

Popular job search website SimplyHired is great for both experienced and burgeoning freelancers. With this site, you can browse freelance jobs in your area, narrowing your searches using filters such as distance and date posted. You can also use the salary tool to get a rough sense of how much artists make in your area.

Industry-Specific Job Sites for Freelancers

Freelance Writing Gigs

Geared toward freelance writers, Freelance Writing Jobs curates the best freelance writing gigs on the web. The site’s moderators update posts daily, sifting through hundreds of opportunities to find high-quality listings. Unlike other platforms, you don’t need to bid on jobs and must apply directly through the original job posting.

Designhill

Designhill is built for freelance designers and lets companies either create project contests or search for designers’ services through the platform’s database. One bonus is that creatives can design, print, and sell shirts through a personal store.

Behance

Managed by Adobe, Behance supplies creative inspiration while showcasing premier artistic work in areas like illustration, animation, and web design. The platform acts as both a portfolio site and a social media network, allowing like-minded individuals to connect, collaborate, and find quality leads.

99designs

99designs is another design-focused website that connects freelancers with both domestic and international businesses. The platform supports independent designers by helping them find job opportunities and encouraging them to collaborate with other artists through online communities.

Rodhus Creative Workspaces – Brighton

No current art studios available but good to keep an eye on. Some info about the studios instead:

Founded in 2011, Rodhus studios provide workspace for creatives. It houses over 30 makers, designers and artists here at the Brighton site. They range from photographers, through to woodworkers, doll makers, screen printers, musicians, fashion and product designers a hackspace and more besides.

Previously the Hollingdean Road site was the home of Horsell Electrics an established, family run lighting company. In 2010 Horsell Electrics was sold to the Drallim Group and the lighting business moved to Shoreham, leaving a big empty factory to fill.

An industrial building on this scale is rare in a city like Brighton. While not entirely suited to modern ‘lean’ manufacturing techniques,  the factory is however an ideal space for smaller organisations to work and share thoughts and ideas.

The aim has always been to preserve the factory as a vibrant work hub where people physically make and do things.

The city of Brighton has a burgeoning creative sector with many home based start ups. Brighton has over 4000 people working in the creative industries., Rodhus offers the opportunity for these people to take the next step.

In essence, Rodhus is a community of creative businesses under one roof, a collaboration that allows for cheaper overheads with the added benefit of interdisciplinary influence and support.
