In Mauritius, Sega is a dance which originated from the traditional music of the island. It is also one of the major music genres of Mauritius. It has origins in the music of slaves as well as their descendants, the Mauritian Creole people. Sega is danced without the feet ever leaving the ground. Instead, the rest of the body moves. It is a rich part of the culture and I wanted to include it in my work. I started with the idea to make relief prints, however, as seen in the left-hand picture, these didn’t go as planned. Instead, I decided to use lino again as I know that it works well, and I am glad that I did because the prints came out really well. I used a combination of red and black ink, as well as a variety of coloured paper. Some prints printed better than others, but this is expected as the amount of ink and pressure applied are all factors of a good print. I am happy with the outcomes and I think they will make a good edition to my final zine.
