Experimenting with ink & bleach

Ink and bleach is a process which I was introduced to in my A-Levels, and I haven’t explored much since. When thinking about different processes that I could explore in my work, ink and bleach came to mind. I really enjoy the process as well as the overall effect, and I would like to use it more in my work. I wanted to create some images of the wildlife that I saw in Mauritius so I created a a piece of the Aldabra giant tortoise and some zebras.

This was the images before the bleach was applied. I think that they look very bold but lack tone, which is where the bleach helps. I applied the bleach to the areas of the images that I wanted to be lighter so that shadows and tone are created. The process is fairly quick as the bleach doesn’t take long to take the colour of the ink away. I also think that the brown tones that the bleach created fit the images well and it adds another element, rather than just black and white. I definitely want to experiment more with this process and create some more imagery using ink and bleach.
