Lino printing: dodo bird – 30/03/23

I have created another set of prints of a dodo bird. The dodo bird was native to Mauritius and lived there between the 1500s and 1600s. These birds were flightless and lacked natural predators which meant that they were easy prey for sailors. These sailors named this species ‘dodo’ which means ‘stupid’. These birds were driven to extinction in the early colonial period, with the last confirmed sighting being in the 1660s.

I wanted to create artwork about the dodo bird as it is one of the animals that Mauritius is famous for inhabiting. Also when I visited the country, there was lots of history about dodo birds, as well as models to be bought as souvenirs. I found some images of the dodo bird to base my prints on . The main focus of my lino is the bird and I also included some plant around the dodo bird to add another element to the print, like this image I have below.

I really like how these prints turned out, the colours are bold and the print stands out nicely. Unlike my previous prints of the palm trees, I decided to keep the background and just cut out the outline of the design. I like this look and I think it suits the print more than if I were to cut out the background. I really like the look of the pink ink as it is very bold and it stands out, also these prints printed well. I also like the look of the black ink on the different coloured paper.
