The School of Applied Social Science (SASS) ran a pre-entry module for incoming first years, entitled Hit the Ground Running. The module was composed of four units and ran from early August to early October in 2016. The video case study below, provides an overview of the project and includes feedback from students who took part. Approximately 90% of new students took part in the pre-entry module, with 31% completing all four units.

Hello. I now work in Canterbury and I wondered if you could send me some more information about this project as it’s similar to something we would like to do here. I am still available on my student email account. I notice there are templates and demo sites in Blackboard – would I be able to look around them?
Hi N¡na,
Good to hear from you. Here is a link to a webinar that I presented for the ALT Winter Conferences in 2016: https://sas.elluminate.com/p.jnlp?psid=2016-12-06.0650.M.DD0158B7B72255921BFCF9ACEBA1B0.vcr&sid=7565 (original conference listing is here: https://altc.alt.ac.uk/online2016/sessions/pre-entry-module-design-preparing-incoming-students-for-he-study-with-a-smidgeon-of-play-74/). You need to download and install the Blackboard collaborate launcher before the video playback file will open. Also if you do still have access to studentcentral then you can access areas of the current version of Hit the Ground Running as a guest. If you search for ‘2018 Hit the Ground Running’.
I hope that this helps a bit,
Fiona
