Student teachers help pupils get active
A group of 15 final year student primary teachers ran a series of activities at The South Downs School as part of their degree.
The students have all chosen physical education as their subject specialism on the Primary Education (5-11 years) BA(Hons) with QTS course. The visit to South Downs, a school for pupils with significant complex needs, was one of many different activities the student teachers have taken part in to put theory into practice.
As PE specialists the students have had the opportunity to visit local schools and teach a range of physical activities to primary aged students. They have led lessons in dance, athletics, games and outdoor adventurous activities.
The staff and head teacher at South Downs commented on ‘how professional our trainees were and had ‘excellent subject knowledge and versatility in adapting activities to meet all the children’s needs’. One teacher added that it was ‘the most active she’s ever seen her class’.
PE is just one of many subject specialisms our student teachers can choose at the end of their first year of the degree.
Other options include mathematics, history and geography, science and art and design.
Senior lecturer Annette Mclachlan said: “The student teachers have worked incredibly hard over the last two years in their PE modules, and it was an absolute pleasure to see them teaching children with a range of complex needs with such confidence and enthusiasm.“
