Photography workshop for trainee teachers

We were delighted to welcome Photoworks to the Falmer campus to deliver a workshop for our Art and Design PGCE students.

Flavia and Lindsey from Brighton-based Photoworks delivered an all-day workshop on teaching photography in schools.

They introduced the students to their online teaching resources, as well as running workshops for the students to make their own pinhole cameras and camera obscuras.

The students learnt how to use the functions of an SLR camera, as well as creative ways to engage students with photographic processes and how to analyse photographic imagery in order to inspire new project ideas.

The whole day was packed full of new ideas and inspired projects that could easily be taken straight into the classroom. Photoworks work closely with local schools in Brighton on collaborative projects, so some of our trainees will be lucky enough to work alongside Photoworks again in the future.

Although some of our trainee teachers are keen photographers many had identified photography as a gap in their subject knowledge. At the end of the workshop, students were able to see how their knowledge and understanding in other areas of art and design can easily be transferred to delivering successful photographic projects in school.
