New publication released from School of Education team

Congratulations to Andy Davies (Postgraduate Secondary Programme Leader) and Dr Melanie Norman, (Geography Route Leader) at the University of Brighton’s School of Education, on the release of their new publication this week, titled ‘Getting into Secondary Teaching’.

This edited collection has been written with contributions from members of the School of Education.

Getting into Secondary Teaching

The book is essential reading for anyone considering making an application for secondary initial teacher education or preparing to begin a programme. Introducing the reader to a range of perspectives on teaching and teacher education, it provides guidance through the application process and choosing the right training route to achieve a successful outcome.

Key chapters cover pathways into secondary teaching, professional learning, developing as a subject specialist, classroom management and working with young people.

Useful features such as jargon busters, progress checklists and case studies make the material accessible, helping to navigate the ‘new landscape’ of teacher education. In addition it encourages the reader to reflect critically on their own school experiences of learning and teaching and uses example of theory, research and practice to help develop an informed stance on important themes within secondary education.

“In writing this book we wanted to give an honest account of the highs and lows of life working in secondary schools. To do this we collaborated with colleagues with many years’ experience and success working in schools and teacher education who have written about areas of specialist knowledge and expertise.  ‘Getting into Secondary Teaching’  offers examples from experienced teachers, teachers in training, pupils and even parents who tell it to you ‘exactly as it is’ so you know the expectations of the many different facets involved in being a teacher.  Furthermore, the book encapsulates research, theory and practice in teaching to enable you to develop an informed stance on important themes in secondary education”.

So if you are an aspiring teacher or you know one, looking for a direct insight into the teaching career this is the book for you.

      Hi Kieran

It’s not too late to apply although some PGCE and School Direct courses are now full for 2016 entry nationally. Is there a particular subject that you are interested in teaching and is it postgraduate? If you could let me know I can get someone to contact you with further information.

      Kindest regards
      Kerry

        Hi Kerry,

thank you for your reply, I want to be a P.E teacher and I’m looking for a physical education course with QTS I meet all of the entry requirements so any information would be a massive help.

          Hi again Kieran

If you hold an undergraduate degree then unfortunately PE PGCE and PE School Direct Tuition have both now closed nationally for 2016 entry. PE School Direct Salaried I’m told still has vacancies but not with the University of Brighton as our places have been filled. You can search for any remaining places on UCAS Teacher Training: https://www.ucas.com/ucas/teacher-training

If you do not have a first degree then PE BA(Hons) with QTS at the University of Brighton is still open for applications for 2016 entry and you can see more information on the course here: https://www.brighton.ac.uk/courses/study/physical-education-ba-hons-with-qts.aspx

          I hope this helps
          Kerry
