Children’s Literature expert supporting the children of Calais

Pamela Lewis, Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton’s School of Education was interviewed on radio reverb to discuss the importance of a project that takes books to children in the Calais Camps.

book 1The School Bus Project has invited pupils from Brighton and Hove Primary schools to record themselves reading aloud their favourite books.  A barcode stuck to the back of the corresponding book can be read by a special scanning device which enables the audio to be heard through headphones. This book 2enables the reader to ‘read’ the book and also hear the words spoken out loud. As most of the children in the Calais camps having English as an additional language, hearing someone reading the book gives them access to the words as well as the pictures.

You can listen to the show and find out more about the project here. Pamela is interviewed at 18 and 33 minutes.
