A disease of poverty ends child schooling

Swollen, diseased foot of a black child sitting in a chair on a shiny floor

Ibrahim is a twelve years old. He lives in west Darfur State- Sudan. Ibrahim had mycetoma since his early childhood. He stopped official education because of his foot swelling, he does not want to disrupt his colleagues at school by the bad smell of swelling therefore, he moved to Khalwa (a Quranic school) instead. Regrettably, Ibrahim’s father died before his birth and no one care of his health condition earlier. Ibrahim’s uncle accompanied him to the Mycetoma Research Centre seeking care despite the distance length between Khartoum and his home which is about 1000 km driving. Ibrahim now is an isolated person he is no longer able to participate in the social events in the village. He feels guilty when his friends and relatives are attending wedding or religious ceremony in the village because of his physical appearance he said “I don’t want to abash my mother with others”.
