11.00-12.30, Huxley 406, Moulsecoomb
Part of the Doctoral College’s Festival of Postgraduate Research

Sign up for Blind Date with a Living Book to find out more about PhD students at Brighton! This friendly, informal event offers insights into a range of doctoral research along with glimpses into a side of research life we don’t always get to see.

Our ‘books’ are PhD students and whether you’re a current doctoral student, are hoping to become one, or are simply PhD-curious, you’re warmly invited to step inside our library and ‘borrow’ a book or two. The twist is, you don’t get to judge the books by their covers.

Select your book based on clues to the content then pull up a chair to hear from the person themselves. You’ll be able to find out about research projects from disciplines across the university in addition to hearing doctoral students’ perspectives on topics such as:

  • What’s it like doing a PhD when you’re the parent of small children? Or when you’re juggling a full time job? Or when you’re black and striving to manage your mental health?
  • Curious about life as an international student? Another’s experience of their PhD highs and lows? Want to chat to a viva survivor?
  • How do you find a supervisor if you want to apply? What do supervisors look for in a research proposal?
  • Feel as if everyone is smarter and more confident than you? That you have no right to be studying for the highest degree in the land? Meet Imposter Syndrome whose symptoms are familiar to many postgraduates.

Blind Date with a Living Book brings a wealth of research-related topics to life, quite literally. It’s an opportunity to make connections, broaden your awareness, and discover more about our research students on both an academic and a personal level.

Book wrapped in brown paperSign up for this event, part of the Doctoral College’s Festival of Postgraduate Research, and we’ll issue you with your living library borrower card on the day. Drop by the ‘library’ (actually Huxley 406) at any time between 11.00 and 12.30 and browse our blind date shelves. You can engage with your book on a one-to-one basis, or sit down with a friend or fellow browser, and ‘read’ together. We’ll have tea and coffee on offer – and we promise not to shush anyone!

This living library drop-in takes place before the main festival programme in Huxley 300 (1.30pm onwards). You can attend both events or just one but please register separately for each event.

Register for Blind Date with a Living Book and collect your borrower card on the day.
