Students in the studio creating podcast

This series of podcasts featured University of Brighton students and alumni talking about their student journey through the lens of belonging. Gale and Parker (2014) suggest three conceptualisations of transition within higher education relating to induction, development and becoming. These concepts formed part of the conversations as students reflected on:

  • their pre-HE educational experiences
  • starting at university
  • progressing through university
  • leaving university and entering the workplace
  • transitioning into postgraduate study

The podcasts were hosted by project partners Tom and Marina, with 3-4 students in each episode discussing their experiences of transition into HE and their lived experiences. The podcast questions were co-created between Tom and Marina, including decisions about the length and format of interviews, the production and editing of the podcasts.

Listening to student conversations about their experiences of education has provided a rich and informative reflective practice. The project has culminated in a Changing Spaces Podcast Series focusing on different stages of transition for students; from school to university, starting at university, continuing through university and looking towards graduation and beyond.

An additional output from this project included a collaborative presentation with colleagues from Queen Margaret University on Using Podcasts as a Medium for Peer Assisted Learning in two university contexts – Marina Trowell and Tom Shiner, University of Brighton; Linnea Wallen and Lisa Cruden, Queen Margaret University – presented at the International Forum for Peer Learning and Peer Support.
