Introduction
Over the coming weeks I will be following the development of an exciting construction project in Coldean. Hyde and Brighton & Hove city council have come together to construct 242 homes in the form of 6 blocks of flats ranging from 5-7 storeys. Just to the left of university of brightens Varley Park development this site is nestled in amongst the trees. I have chosen to study this project as it is right next to where I live so I can see the process day by day. Another reason I have chosen to look at this project is because it has an interesting format, the 3.3ha sloping site is no easy feat to build on and there will be a lot of wild green space around the site once the buildings are established. The project started in July 2021 and 8 months in they have nearly finished constructing the reinforced concrete structures for all 6 buildings. It will be verry interesting to see what the next stages in the process are and to get a sense for the general sustainability of the project. PMC are the contractors being used for this project and they pride themselves on building affordable and sustainable houses. The first available houses are due in 2023 so the project is some time from being finished. Half of the flats will be available to rent from the council and the other half will be sold through a part ownership scheme by Hyde.
