The Curie group

After a week of being at uni from 9 to five every day, going home to do more uni work, several cups of hot chocolate every day, 1 cup of coffee (even though i dont like coffee), few hours of sleep, no social life and glue on everything I own we are finally on the last day.

It might seem like a struggle but this week have been a good experience for me, both when it comes to the social and academical aspect of things. I have been able to talk to and gotten to know people in my class that i haven’t talked to before. Since i’m new in the class this was a great way for me to get to know people. Being tierd, frustrated and working together is actually a great way to bond friendships. I have also learned a lot this week, when it comes to team work, how to build a health clinic, and how to make a model. And I this is an experience I definitely will take with me!

The Curie group have worked very well together, we have had good communication and great team work. We had a lot of good ideas that ended up with a structure that everyone liked.

All in all this week have been better then i imagined it to be!

Thank you guys for a great week!

The presentation

After an early morning with everyone running around half asleep trying to finish the last pieces of the posters, models and printing out, it was finally time to have the presentation!

All the groups presented their work, until last it was our group the present our work. We had divided the presentation into different topics that different people in out group would talk about. I talked about the precedence studies, about ebola and the development of the layout.

There were several people there to evaluate the presentation and the work we had done. Emmanuel our client was there as well to evaluate and see what we had been working on, ha was especially focusing on the security aspect of the design, when it comes to not spreading the disease.

The final day – The model

The day started by making some last few alterations on the model. Adding sand, trees and people to make the model look more real. We were all very pleased with how the model ended up looking like, and we were all proud of the work we have done over the past week. 1 2

By placing the tent cover on only half of the structure we were able to show of the layout we had chosen for our health clinic. And also show the walls that we had chosen as the internal wall structures.

Doctacan

Its been a enjoyable and successful week! I am very pleased with our final model/Design and how we all worked well as a team to complete all the objectives in time.

On first receiving the brief, it was clear it was going to be a challenging week.   Due to team work and dedication we overcame all the challenges we faced and ended up with a good design that I believe could work with a couple of improvements.

1The first challenge we faced was to work out the layout of the hospital and the flow of staff and patients within the site. We worked on a few different floor plans and decided a octagon shape allowed us to locate rooms in the appropriate places to make it the safest environment possible for the occupants within the structure.

2

We spent a lot of time and thought into how the structure would be erected once on site, the model was almost complete before we came up with a good solution to this problem: a mechanism that is  similar to a umbrellas. which allows the structure to be easily be assembled using a winch.

Overall, I think our design was effective and meet the briefs requirements. It was also interesting to see what other groups came up with and every ones designs were so different from each over but all seemed to work and were creative.

Presentation day

It was a day of stress, nerves and last minute adjustments as the final presentation loomed
All teams raced towards the 12 o’clock deadline, but all managed to finish and present amazing designs and models. With some brilliant techniques being used from each group. It was at some point surprising that all these models could fit into such a small container.

In the end after a stressful tiring week, everyone could be proud of the effort and outcome.

Team Fry – The Final Day

After a long week of designing, testing and re-adjusting our model, the day had finally come for our presentation.

The whole week has, no doubt, been a fantastic experience in architectural design and modelling. Throughout the week we did come to a few problems along the way whether it was because of the complexity of our panel designs or because we accidentally forgot about including a pharmacy (lol), but due to our ‘flexible’ design (as Peter would say) we managed to fix the problems quickly. In the end I am glad everything happened the way it did and I wouldn’t change it.

The day has come to an end where the presentations are now over and less nerving now that we have all been assessed and questioned for our design.

I would like to thank all of the Architectural students in Team Fry – Karime, Tom and Peter for making it such a great team. Also thanks to Noel, Kemi and Poorang for having us be a part of your Design Week.

The Doctacan Do It

20141114-174722.jpg

We arrived nice and early to apply the finishing touches to what is now  the end  of an enjoyable but tiring week. We went straight down to print our poster that was completed the evening before. Feeling calm and collected for the presentation we prepared some notes and discussed between us how we would present our final model. I was very impressed with a lot of the Hazelwick students as getting up and presenting in front of a group of people can be pretty difficult. and for their experience they did very well.

Countdown was on and several groups were in panic mode trying to finalise their models , to which fortunately everyone managed. Me and Tom got to work setting up the presentation by hanging our poster and placing our model ( VERY VERY CAREFULLY).

As you can see, Tom just couldn’t wait to present our model, look at that smile.

Presentations got swiftly underway and the morale within the room was great, it was clear everyone was pleased to have completed a successful week. Questions were fired and answers..well I think everyone did their best.

Some projects were very impressive and I feel that we all learnt something from each one. In general I feel that the week has exceeded my expectations. The relaxed environment, friendly atmosphere and final designs was all great, also I really feel that design week has bought everyone on the course a lot closer, a great thing for the year of studies that we have ahead of us.

Thanks to all the lecturers and Hazelwick teachers and everyone else involved, I had a great week.

Fry Group (day-5)

Many lesson to learn from how to present a design. Some of the question do catch you out BUT they do teach you what details you need to concentrate on. So next time Noel and Kemi, we will be ready for you!!!! Great week, good team, good experience. I enjoyed my first taste of social media and my many followers(Jason), but sadly it’s back to the fax!!!!!

Rob Smith, Team Fleming, Thursday 14th and Friday 15th

Thursday 14th: today is the day where over-tiredness starts to rear its ugly head in the form of sloppy workmanship (from me) and irritation. The day started off as it intended to continue SLOWLY. Myself and Josh carried on making the model and Gabby started to format the information we had gathered into a clear concise A1 poster.

After lunch the model was pretty much finished so we busied ourselves writing up information that we may use on our poster, information gathering and more model making.

Th day slowly plodded on until 6am when we decided to call it quits. However we had decided to info gather when we got home.

Friday 15th: Today started off OK. The kids were in nice and early to help us clean up the mess which was substantial. The main priorities for the morning were to finish the site boundary fence as well as finalizing the internal layout drawings.

(I don’t know why I look so worried)

CRIT TIME

We set up in the adjoining room, the model, small sketches and the poster. Looking very professional.

The lectures were very kind (compared with a crit in the Architecture department) which was a relief. The size of the purposed buildig was a bit of an issue with Noel and Kemi but as we stated early on in the speech the design is modular so there is allowance for far more ground to be covered. However we were commended on our design of movement through the spaces.

Overall I have enjoyed this project and hope to do something similar to this in the future.
