SINGLE SHEET – HEATING VINYL HEALTH CONCERNS

I EXPERIENCED SOME PRETTY NASTY FUMES WHEN EXPERIMENTING WITH HEATING VINYL AND RESEARCHED THE POTENTIAL RISKS

YINYL RECORDS ARE MADE OF POLYVINYL CHLORIDE AND POLYVINYL ACETATE. WHEN HEATED ABOVE ROOM TEMP THESE WILL OFF GAS CHLORINE AND DIOXIDES – BOTH ARE VERY DANGEROUS.

BECAUSE OF THESE DANGERS AND THE SUB-OPTIMAL TEST REULTS I DECIDED TO NOT EXPERIMENT RUTHER WITH VINYL.

SINGLE SHEET – VINYL RECORD TESTS & THOUGHTS

MY INNITIAL THOUGHT WEN RECIEVING THE BRIEF WAS TO TRY AND USE A WASTE MATERIAL THAT ALREADY EXISTS AS A SHEET. I INNITIALLY RESEARCHED AND EXPERIMENTED WITH VINYL RECORDS.

ABOUT 10 SECONDS OF EXPOSURE TO BOILED WATER IS REQUIRED TO MAKE THE VINYL MALLEABLE

malleable vinyl

THE VINYL HAD TO BE WORKED QUICKLY AS IT FIRMED UP WITHIN SECONDS OF BEING REMOVED FROM THE HEAT SOURCE

I WAS IMPRESSED WITH HOW EASY IT WAS TO MAKE THE MATERIAL MALLEABLE AND HOW EVENLY IT WOULD TAKE ON A FORM
