Win a book plus try my short quiz for World Book Day 2016

It’s World Book Day today and to celebrate I have devised a short but masterly quiz about well-known children’s books. I will put the answers at the end of the post so don’t worry if you can’t get them all (my testers didn’t!). Nearly all of the books are featured in the Booktrust‘s 100 Best Books.

Can you guess the book titles I’m referring to in these crossword-style clues?

  1. Voids in the ground
  2. Yorkshire illuminations
  3. The king of the jungle and a sorceress battle in a cupboard
  4. Tic tac toe
  5. Which would you prefer?
  6. Writing a letter to a menagerie
  7. Owlets
  8. The journal of a timid/weak child
  9. There’s an ogre on the phone for you
  10. Between the end of day and the start of night
  11. Prince William’s brother (his proper name) is just dreadful!
  12. Eternally
  13. Maybe later, Bernie
  14. Multiples of one thousand thousands
  15. Old tat
  16. A wise bird dinner set
  17. One time only
  18. Small birds and women warriors
  19. It was me who made the fortress my prisoner

WIN A BOOK!

Let me know how you went and/or how you celebrated World Book Day by using the comments box below. All students (sorry staff!) who add a comment to this post over the next week (ending midnight Thursday 10th March) will go in the draw to win the fantastic new book, Timeline: A Visual History of Our World by Peter Goes (Gecko Press). This is a large-format (27 x 37cm) sumptuous visualisation of important events, time periods and civilisations throughout history for both children and adults. It would be a great addition to your teacher’s toolkit or even your coffee table! I will notify the winner by email and announce the winner in the next post for this blog.

    1. Thanks Hannah! Yes I made sure that there were are few difficult ones in there and someone pointed out that number 15 could also have been Trash by Andy Mulligan which I hadn’t thought of.

  1. Great quiz! I didn’t get 15 nor 19 but I’m happy that I got the rest 😉
    Happy World Book Day everyone!!

  2. I got 12 and a half. The half point was because I knew there was a popular book that was called ‘I…something…castle” but couldn’t remember the precise title. Happy to forgo that half if it’s not allowed.

Thanks for a good quiz! “3.The king of the jungle and a sorceress battle in a cupboard” is definitely my favourite clue. I also learned what Amazons are, so it was informative to boot.

You’ll have to talk me through how “dinner set” = “service” however. Too cryptic or obscure for me!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it Joe! In answer to your question, a dinner service (or dinner set) is a complete matching set of plates and dishes. A dinner service with an owl pattern gives the name to the title of the book, The Owl Service. That was one of the harder questions!

  3. I spent the day making puppets and making books tokens as well as parading in costume on my school placement.
I dressed in rosy cheeks and pyjamas as Emily from ‘Night-Night, Emily’ by Claire Freedman.
As well as reading aloud to the school in Assembly I also found and used this website for the children to experience books and really look at the illustrations which are beautifully modified to move on this website: http://www.storylineonline.net/

  4. That sounds like a fun day Nadia! Good outfit – I just looked her up as I didn’t know that book. storylineonline.net looks good and I love that James Earl Jones reads one of the stories. Almost like having Darth Vader reading to you…

  5. I dressed as Hermione from Harry Potter- my favourite book character since I was 9! I asked children in my placement school to bring in their favourite books and we wrote book reviews which we then shared with each other!

  6. I spent the day dressed as Stickman from my favourite Julia Donaldson book. I ran a reading café in my school, where children were able to order their chosen book from a menu as well as sampling different genres of books at different tables. A fantastic day and role on World Book Day next year.
