As we find ourselves in this difficult time following the UK Supreme Court ruling last month, the Centre for Transforming Sexuality and Gender (CTSG) would like to reaffirm our commitment to supporting the rights and wellbeing of all trans, intersex and non-binary people. As a research centre of (primarily cisgender) global experts in sexuality and gender, we assert that there is no conflict between such support and the rights and wellbeing of cisgender people.

The CTSG has a long history of research and advocacy by, with, and for LGBTQ+ communities. This is reflected in the very name of our research centre, in that we are committed to positively transforming sexualities and gender, through research that challenges hegemonic norms and inequalities.

Whilst it is unclear what the wider repercussions of this ruling will be and how they might unfold, the CTSG’s priorities remain the same – we will continue to advocate for inclusion and equality, to challenge discrimination and injustice in research and society, and to progress positive social change. We will also continue to create an environment that is safe for all and where everyone is welcomed, valued, and supported.

We have arranged for a monthly CTSG ‘drop-in’ for any of our staff or student members whom may be affected by this ruling and wish to have a safe space to discuss their views with us. We will run thus drop-in for as long as it is deemed useful/supportive. There is no need to book, just join us even if it is just to say hello! The in-person drop-in will be held on May 6th from 2-4pm at Mithras House (Room 150) and an online drop-in will be held on May 16th from 1.00-3.00pm (updated) on Microsoft Teams.

**Edit: We’ve added two more drop-in sessions this month on May 23rd from 10-12pm (Room 150) and May 28th from 2-4pm on MS Teams. If you are not a member of the CTSG and plan to join via MS Teams, please email us at ctsg@brighton.ac.uk in advance so we can grant you access.

The CTSG stands firmly in solidarity and allyship with our trans, intersex and non-binary communities.
