The CTSG is proud to announce an upcoming seminar hosted by our international visiting research fellow for 24-25 Dr. Tom Carpino (Duke University, Global Health Institute [Hock Fellow])!
Sexual Wellness & Syndemics: Lessons Learned from Mpox
Dr. Tom Carpino is a social and infectious disease epidemiologist who recently completed his PhD at Johns Hopkins University, and is now a postdoctoral researcher at Duke University. His research examines the intersection of infectious diseases, stigma, and sexual health among key populations – from LGBTQ+ communities to transactional sex workers. His dissertation explored the mpox outbreak in the U.S., and he has collaborated with researchers in the U.K. on various projects, including the development of the Kink Orientation Scale.
In this talk, Dr. Carpino will introduce the concept of syndemics—overlapping epidemics of infections, mental health challenges, and other social issues—and explore how these interactions shape public health outcomes. Using the mpox outbreak as a case study, he will discuss how stigma, policy, and healthcare access influence disease transmission and response efforts. The talk will highlight key lessons learned and consider broader implications for HIV, STIs, and other emerging infections within marginalized communities.
