Bogolan: Malian mud painting
Taken from Sophie’s website:
I am a graduate of the Royal College of Art, Fashion School, where I also did plenty of textiles.
For the Iast decade  had a hotel built out of mud in the ancient mud city of Djenne in Mali. During these years I also explored the traditional technique of Malian mud painting, or Bogolan. The technique is a combination of dyestuffs  derived from local plants which has a chemical reaction when they are painted with the mud from the river Niger or its tributary the Bani: the mud turns the  fabric black wherever it has touched the dyed cloth.
Bogolan is fun and easy and my company Malimali made it into clothing and furnishings for the hotel.
