Significance of Automatism in (Neo Expressionist) Art

According to tate.org.uk

I have always been drawn to the automatic drawing/art process as it is rare to find such apt means to visually represent the human subconscious – this being so rich, complex and unpredictable. The human subconscious is the heart of the unknown human identity – understanding ,or at least, dissecting this pure truth in a world that is so constructed and lead by the ego is ,in my opinion, an important means of reflecting on the reality and depth of the human condition.

Neo Expressionism and the Identity of Gesture

Cy Twombly (1928-2011) Untitled (Murder of Olofernes) signed and dated 'Cy Twombly 1964' (upper right); inscribed 'Murder of Olofernes' (upper center) graphite, colored pencil, wax crayon and ballpoint pen on paper 27 1/2 x 39 1/2 in. (69.8 x 100.4 cm.) Executed in 1964.

I have always been drawn to an automatic, gestural style of drawing. They are unapologetically crude and do not conform to traditional concepts of structure and composition. I find this to be an honest and intimate portrayal of the human condition.

As time passes I am interested to see if the organic and irregular nature of these techniques can be used to reflect our transition into the visual age. The Digital format is ultimately defined by its regularity and immaterial synthetic nature.

Expressive features-

  • Irregular and unreliable nature of materials (varying opacity, definition, smudging, texture)
  • Pace and Gesture demonstrated by varying concentrations of line wor
  • ‘Mistakes’ included
  • Rich in texture and layering
  • Irregular and Unpredictable composition and mark making
