Highways England is the government-owned company charged with operating, maintaining and improving England’s motorways and major A roads.
Board member – Dean Sporn
Dean graduated from University of Brighton in 1990 with Civil Engineering BEng(Hons). He started his career with Kier Construction working on the Sizewell B Nuclear power station, the UKs first pressurised water reactor which was the biggest project in Europe at the time. Dean now has 30 years’ experience and has held several senior leadership roles both in the UK and overseas. For the last ten years he has been responsible for leading a business with full profit and loss accountability. These roles have been predominantly leading construction contracting businesses delivering large-scale infrastructure schemes.
Dean has experience in the road, rail, defence, health, commercial and marine sectors and across all contracting types, including private partnerships, alliancing, management contracting, ECI, design and build, and construct only. His experience in Australia saw him leading the New South Wales and New Zealand business for CPB contractors (the largest contractor in Australia). The business unit was delivering revenues of A$2b per annum delivering major road, rail, health and commercial Infrastructure. Dean returned to the UK in 2017 and is now a senior director for Highways England.
Upon hearing of a vacancy within the IAB in 2019 Dean was keen to join and put something back at the university where he started his civil engineering journey.
