Digital health

Digital health research and enterprise at the University of Brighton draws upon expertise in nursing technologies in health sciences, data analytics and secure systems in computing, co-design and health informatics in social science, quantified self in digital media cultures and human-centred design in creative design disciplines. This rich interdisciplinary convergence is consolidated through our partnership with the University of Sussex in Brighton and Sussex Medical School and Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and our leadership of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Design Service South East

It is further contextualised by our relationships with  Brighton & Hove City CouncilBrighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group, the Sussex and East Surrey Sustainability and Transformation Partnership, and the Kent Surrey and Sussex Academic Health Science Network.

Our digital health work is underpinned by facilities including our Digital Catapult 5G Brighton project and Data Research & Innovation Lab, our MIT Fab Lab offering digital fabrication and prototyping and our groundbreaking Brighton & Hove Living Lab network of expert testers in adult social care facilities. We are committed to an inclusive, patient-centric approach that builds on our excellent reputation for community engagement and our particular recognition for the social impact of our research.

To support interdisciplinary best practice, internal networking and consortia forming workshops with external partners are held regularly. A horizon scan of relevant funding calls will also be available at all our events, as will support and advice from relevant Knowledge Exchange Managers.

Information on forthcoming events is available from futuresadmin@brighton.ac.uk. Find out more about the Leach Court Living Lab research by reading our press release: Residents test new digital health technologies.

Digital health & care inaugural event

Digital Health & Care Internal Networking Lunch

Data Research & Innovation Lab

Watts 622

23rd May 2018

“A great event and wonderful to hear about so many exciting projects”  Dr. Claire Rosten, National Institute for Health Research, Research Design Service

With a focus on human-centred design, interdisciplinary, ethical innovation and defining best practice, we were delighted so many people gave up their valuable time and made the effort to attend and contribute to the Digital Health Networking Lunch.

We focused on the recommendation of the NCUB Report, The Human Factor: Driving Digital Solutions for 21st Century Health and Care.

Attendees came from across a number of schools including the School of Media, School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics, School of Applied Social Science and School of Health Sciences, COREs such as Centre for Digital Media Cultures, Centre for Secure, Intelligent & Usable Systems and Centre for Regenerative Medicine alongside REGs such as Applied Data Analytics Research and Enterprise Group as well as BSMS and the National Institute for Health Research Research Design Service South East.

“It was a really interesting session and great to get know more about all the exciting plans that are unfolding across the University”

Dr. Anya Lux, NIHR Research Design Serivce

Following this event, Professor Karen Cham spoke on the theme of Human Factors In Digital Health at the Healthy Futures Conference on 5 July 2018.

As agreed, she is also in the process of developing best practice guidelines to support human-centred digital health innovation processes and she is always happy to consult, support and/or mentor on this and our technical labs and facilities that may be of value to your progress in this nascent field.

Additionally, the University has agreed with Digital Catapult Centre London, that the SMEs working with the DARZI Fellow can be part of the DCCB 5G Testbed Stage One Use Cases, to investigate how their products and services might play out under 5G signal conditions. This gives us a step towards co-design opportunities at Leach Court in Brighton for 5G augmented adult social care provisions such as Next Generation wearables and smart homes.

Following this, the Digital Health & Care Consortia Forming Event took place in September, with special guests including Eric Kihlstrom, interim Director of the Healthy Ageing Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and Keiron Sparrowhawk, Founder and CEO, MyCognition, alongside representatives of Brighton & Hove City Council, the NHS, the Clinical Care Commissioning Group and the Academic Health Science Network.

In addition to the Brighton Futures team, the Digital Health & Care participants were:
