Malcolm Taylor (OBE), Steve Roud and Laura Hockenhull

Sussex Traditions’ is a cultural charity which gathers and shares traditions handed down by the people of the county: arts and activities, beliefs customs and crafts, songs and stories.

Songs and superstition, poetry and play, farming and food, dialect and dance; just some of the heritage that can be shared through the easily searchable forthcoming website, including all kinds of written and audio visual material.

Malcolm Taylor (OBE), general manager of Sussex Traditions, will lead the discussion. Alongside other members of the Sussex Traditions committee they will present work to date and discuss how this live archive can bridge the gap between past and present.

Contribute to the discussion on how Sussex Traditions will connect our communities to their past, provide them with a fascinating learning resource, and encourage them to develop, nourish and sustain the culture of Sussex and its people into the future.

Malcolm Taylor is the general manager of Sussex Traditions. He is the Head Librarian for England’s Folk Dance and Song Society at Cecil Sharp House in London and is the editor and compiler of many books for the society. In 2002 he received an OBE for services to music librarianship and heritage.

Steve Roud is the creator of the Roud Folk Song Index and an expert on folklore and superstition. He was formerly Local Studies Librarian for the London Borough of Croydon and Honorary Librarian of the Folklore Society.

Laura Hockenhull is a project worker for Sussex Traditions. She has an MA in Life History Research (University of Sussex), is a tradition folk singer and currently a member of Sussex group The Long Hill Ramblers.
