Structural Book Experimentation – Structure, Tactility and Communication

As part of my experimentation I progressed with my creation of a small scale books, entirely made from repurposed CD cases. This allowed me to test out and understand structure for my larger structural book outcome in my FMP. Working at this reduced size, enabled me to prioritize material behaviour, general assembly/construction and the layout which would inform the target audience.

The use of these CD cases introduced an element of rigidity within this projects topic contrasting the soft materials which I have previously explored. I went forward by integrating fabric pagesĀ  and translucent sheets within the book, allowing for multi sensory interaction. This presents as being one of the key forms of communication. By doing this it invites the reader to engage with the interior of the book instead of relying purely on the text and imagery. This links to my wider research of accessibility and inclusivity.

This exploration led me to formulate a front cover graphic using Adobe illustrator. The front cover explores multiple different colours and depth setting the stage for both the space and the book.

Reflecting on this part of my process, it has emphasised the possibilities that fashion and material led design hold and how they are capable of communication in the physical sense.
