Alec is committed to helping groups of people work together more collaboratively, transparently, and effectively. An accomplished mediator, conflict resolution practitioner, and published researcher, he has worked with employers, business owners, landlords and tenants, HR leaders, and nonprofits to prevent and solve legal problems, support collaborative decision-making, and constructively resolve conflicts before they turn into expensive lawsuits.

In this episode, we offered a detailed analysis of ADR and its relevance in addressing housing disputes in the US. We examined the interconnectedness between ADR and housing-related issues, assessing its suitability and exploring the extent of housing dispute backlogs in the US. Also, we discussed the potential of ADR in alleviating these backlogs in the US courts. Dr Chinwe shared an excerpt from an article on the City and County of San Francisco Government page, underscoring ‘How ADR can be used to settle Housing issues outside the rent ordinance and those that fall under the Rent Ordinance.’ This prompted a discussion about the practical application of this law and its potential applicability in other parts of the US, with Alec providing a comprehensive overview of its implementation in some states.

Against this backdrop, we outlined the step-by-step process for parties to initiate a housing settlement via ADR while scrutinising the eligibility of landlords and tenants to utilise ADR for dispute resolution. Finally, Alec provided a comprehensive analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of employing ADR to address housing disputes or conflicts and highlighted the necessity for more collaboration among ADR organisations/sections to improve public awareness of the above subject matter.

The Intersection of Technology and ADR: AAA-ICDR’s Bold Move in Acquiring the World’s Leading ODR Company

What a day to be alive! As I was preparing my slides for my presentation titled ‘Arbitral Institutes: The Efficacy Cybersecurity and Diversity in Comparison to Litigation.’ I received a LinkedIn notification. Initially, I was inclined to ignore it, but then I decided to click on it, Voilà!
‘The American Arbitration Association (AAA)-International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) on the 30th May 2024- today in New York acquired the World’s Leading ODR Company, Inc. and its parent company, Resourceful Internet Solutions Inc. (RIS), which owns Mediate.com, Arbitrate.com, and several other alternative dispute resolution (ADR) websites.’
According to Rule, Fowler, and Melamed, “this move bolsters the AAA-ICDR’s mission to expand innovative alternative dispute resolution options to benefit businesses, communities and practitioners worldwide.”
Against this backdrop, I believe that the above move is a major factor that distinguishes the AAA-ICDR from the traditional court and the other arbitral institutes/institutions. It is imperative to state that the ICDR is an international division or branch of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and the leading arbitral institution in the US, with considerable experience in administering US domestic arbitrations and international disputes through its ICDR body. They have consistently embraced technology to improve the efficacy of the arbitration process, thereby paving the way for more people to opt for it.

Arbitral Institutes: The Efficacy of Cybersecurity and Diversity in Comparison to Litigation

The process of arbitration in the modern-day context is extolled in terms of relevance to resolving disputes between various entities of a diverse nature. Its relevance has developed due to various parties seeking a more convenient and less complicated alternative to arriving at a conclusion mutually agreeable to everybody. Questions have been asked as to its simplicity, particularly its affordability, in light of the rising cost of the litigation process. It is worthwhile exploring how relevant the process of arbitration is to various entities involved in discord. The paper explores the intricacies of the arbitration process, looking at its procedures, features, elements, advantages and challenges. By examining these intricacies, it is possible to determine if there is any significant role the practice of arbitration has to play in international commercial transactions. If one is to understand the affordability of the arbitration process, one has to understand how it works.

During my time in Hamtramck, Michigan, I had the privilege of meeting Dwydell Garrett, the son of Sarah Sims Garrett. He shared with me the details of this landmark case that spanned over five decades, from 1968 to 2024 -the case of Sarah Sims Garrett et al. v City of Hamtramck.
 The case has far-reaching implications for housing disputes in the US and demonstrates the resilience of the Garrett family and others involved in the class action. It also prompts the question of whether appropriate/alternative dispute resolution (ADR) via mediation could have expedited the case’s resolution.

Mr. Watt started his forty (40) year career in transportation as a front-line worker at New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA). He rose to the position of Financial Secretary of the largest transit local in North America. He has worked for the two largest International transit unions, the Amalgamated Transit Union ATU and the Transport Workers Union TWU. As Health and Safety Director for TWU, he worked with Rail, Transit, and Airline Divisions. In his long career, Mr. Watt has served in many local, national, and international roles.

In addition to his six years as the Labor representative on the NY MTA Board, he has served as Vice-Chair of the Urban Transport Committee of the International Transport Workers Federation ITF, Human Resources Joint Steering Committee with UITP, and delegate to the International Labour Organization on Transport Safety. Mr. Watt has facilitated research with the TRB, NIOSH, and Cornell University’s Institute for Workplace Studies.

In addition to six (6) years on the project selection committee of TCRP, he has been a panel member of fifteen (15) projects, has served on the Transit Oversight Project Oversight Commission, and currently serves on the J-07 Oversight Panel (Synthesis). He is a Consulting Associate of the Mineta Transportation Institute.

He holds a Master of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations, MSILR, from Baruch/Cornell. He is currently the Principal of WattADR, an alternative dispute resolution practice. Since beginning his practice in 2021, he has mediated over eighty (80) disputes. He mediates in Queens County, Long Island Dispute Resolution Centers, and is a member of the Illinois Sixteenth Judicial Circuit Mediation Roster, Kane County. He also assists in training new mediators in the above DRCs and at Hofstra Law School.

In this series, we delved into the Mitchell Hamline School of Law Dispute Resolution Institute (DRI), examining its objectives, methods, and the challenges it faced during its establishment. We provided insight into the state of ADR in St. Paul, Minnesota, at the time the Institute was founded and how ADR has improved access to justice in the United States.

Furthermore, we shed light on the profound impact of the Institute not only on the community in St. Paul, Minnesota but also on the broader public. Professor Sharon emphasised the Institute’s remarkable achievements, revealing its dedication to diversity and inclusiveness. We explored the courses and certificates that the Institute offers and discussed the future of international legal research, particularly ADR, through podcasting.

Finally, it is worth noting that during Dr. Chinwe’s recent visit to St. Paul, Minnesota, she interviewed about twenty (20) individuals from different areas of the city, including the Mall of America, Downtown, and Marshall Avenue. The interviews revealed that none of the individuals knew about ADR, which prompted her to inquire about the Institute’s efforts to educate the public and attract potential users. Professor Sharon highlighted the Institute’s initiatives aimed at educating the public about the benefits of ADR and attracting potential users.
