Two members of the Centre for Earth Observation Science recently visited Nepal as part of the ongoing GCRF-funded Towards Brown Gold project.
Professor James Ebdon and Dr Diogo Gomes da Silva are part of the Towards Brown Gold research team who are re-imagining off grid sanitation in rapidly urbanising areas in Asia and Africa.

Project partners from the UK, Nepal, Northern Ethiopia, Ghana and India presented their findings at a dissemination event held at the Hotel Shankar, in Kathmandu on Thurs Nov 23rd 2023 and attended by government ministers (e.g. from Ministry of Water), health departments, NGOs, academia, and water and sanitation practitioners from across Nepal. Brown Gold Project findings from fieldwork in Nepal (supported by the UoB) are being incorporated into National Water and Sanitation planning guidance.
The project team trip also visited Nepal Engineering College (NEC) to view a prototype latrine emptying device that should help better protect sanitation workers, a community run faecal sludge reuse initiative producing fresh fruit and vegetables for a nearby orphanage and were even shaken (not stirred) by a M3.8 earthquake* which fortunately did not cause any reported damage or injury.
