We are pleased to welcome back CDH Visiting Research Fellow, Pappal Suneja, to share their recent research on design magazines.

Design (1946, Britain) juxtaposed with Design (1957, India)

Pappal Suneja (Visiting Doctoral Researcher, Bauhaus University, Weimar)

13 January 2023, 12:00-13:30

Grand Parade, Main Building, G4

This seminar explores a historical case of critical communication led by two distinct magazines (from Britain and India), ironically both called Design. The magazines reflect a convoluted alliance of culturally and historically manifested social linkages by the influential design proponents and theorists as contributors from across the world. It calls for a resurgence to re-learn from the juxtaposition of the two journals.  We shall together discuss the process in which history, theory, and critique reflect in Design – concerning the institutions and actors that coincided at a point in time (1946 & 1957 onwards) within the journals.
