Learning by Giving: Community Placements at the University of Brighton

The University of Brighton is delighted to be working once again with local charities, community groups, CICs, and not-for-profit organisations across Brighton and Hove and Sussex to offer community placement opportunities to our students.

These placements form part of our students’ degree courses, helping them build essential workplace experience and valuable employability skills. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for them to contribute their time and talents to causes that matter in the local community.

What’s involved?

Community Placements typically involve 30–50 hours of volunteering, carried out regularly between October and May. Your placement student will agree the exact timing and frequency of their involvement with you, their placement host, before starting their placement.

What kind of role can I offer?

There’s a huge range of possibilities! Roles might include volunteering in the arts, community projects, working with children and young people, social media campaigns, horticulture, animals, healthcare and environmental activities—and much more. If the role is meaningful to your organisation, covered by insurance, and risk-assessed, we’d love to hear from you.

What’s next?

“Our student volunteers from the University of Brighton bring course-related skills and knowledge to our diverse team. From history of fashion, environmental sustainability, occupational therapy, to business administration courses – they all play a vital role in supporting our costume resource hire charity. We are extremely grateful for the energy they bring and their professional can-do attitudes.”
