
SAM Employability Week: 3rd-6th March
Summary
SAM Employability Week, organized by the School of Art and Media for National Careers Week, offers sessions to help students transition from graduation to creative practice or further study. Events include expert-led discussions on postgraduate opportunities, financial aid, and personal experiences from graduates of prestigious institutions like the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy.
Students can also learn about protecting their work through an Intellectual Property session led by legal experts from BRIFFA, ensuring their creative outputs remain secure. Additionally, recent alumni will share their career journeys, offering insights and practical advice on sustaining a successful creative practice.
For those managing the financial side of a creative career, a session on Creative Accountancy will break down essential topics like tax returns and HMRC registration. Delivered by Acorn Financial Solutions, this workshop provides crucial financial guidance for freelancers and entrepreneurs in the creative industries.

As part of National Careers Week, the School of Art and Media have organised an Employability Week to help support you with your transition from graduating from starting your own creative practice to going on to further study.
Monday 3rd March: 1-2pm: Postgraduate Study to enhance your Creative Practice
Are you looking to take your creative skills to the next level? As part of SAM Employability Week, this session will explore how Postgraduate study can elevate your creative practice. Whether you’re a designer, artist, or writer, this event will provide valuable insights into how further education can help you refine your craft and expand your employability prospects.
There will be speakers who have studied at the Royal College of Art, the Royal Academy and the University of Brighton who will share their experiences, as well as support on the admissions process and finance.
Tuesday 4th March: 1-2pm: Intellectual Property
As part of SAM Employability Week, this session will introduce you to the different types of Intellectual Property and how best to protect your creative outputs.
Having the right type of Intellectual Property (IP) protection helps you to stop people stealing or copying: the names of your products or brands; your inventions; the design or look of your products; things you write, make or produce
Facilitated by Creative Lawyers, BRIFFA, they will introduce you the different types of IP and answer any questions
Wednesday 5th March: 1-2pm: M2: Graduates in Creative Practice
As part of SAM Employability Week, 3 x recent alumni speakers will reflect on their journey since graduating to how they have developed their creative practice.
They will offer practical advice and there will be an opportunity for you to ask any questions.
Thursday 6th March: 1-2pm: G4: Creative Accountancy
As part of SAM Employability Week, this session will introduce you the ‘maths’ that creatives often face when either setting up their creative practice or freelancing
Facilitated by local accountants Acorn Financial Solutions, they will introduce you to tax returns to registering yourself with HMRC
