Undergraduate research opportunity in School of Arts and Media

Digital Capabilities for Age-Friendly Smart Transport (DICAST)

This study examines the use of smartphones during travel in the city with a focus on older people. The project seeks to understand the potential of emerging technologies combining digital media and smart transport to improve the quality of life for all. It is conducted by an international team, currently concluding a series of interviews in London, Barcelona, Bucharest and Utrecht.

The placement will be a unique opportunity to follow developments in the high impact area of emerging tech as well as an excellent precursor to a final year project about smart media/technologies in a societal context, with potential for post-graduate study. It is anticipated that this placement will lead to at least one publication with the student on the authorship list.

At the end of this placement you will be able to demonstrate experience of:

  • Identifying, following and reviewing new research in a fast-expanding field of technological innovation with a focus on smart mobility.
  • Identifying, reviewing and contributing analysis of under-researched groups.
  • Conducting qualitative research (interview coding) and analysis of policy documents and media (e.g. press, social media).
  • Work as part of international, interdisciplinary teams.
  • Independent research skills.

To benefit from this prospect, you will:

  • Be keen to further develop your research and writing skills.
  • Be open to interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Be keen to contribute towards an inclusive understanding of digital communications.
  • Be keen to understand mobility as part of our digital/data societies.
  • Have developed (or be keen to develop) a sensitivity for social inequalities relating to age discrimination.
