Be More Skilled Week – Digital Skills

Employers tell us they are looking to graduates as the next generation in a digitally competent workforce, but what do we mean when we say digital skills? and how can you identify whether you’ve got what you need?

You use digital skills all the time, but technology develops at a rapid pace and in order to be able to fully participate we need to upskill continually. The pandemic has accelerated this, and many of the new technologies we have adapted to in the past 12 months will become part of everyday life.

Digital skills are also becoming nearly universally required by employers; particularly in higher-level roles that you might expect to apply for as a graduate. Some digital skills are specific to a career area, such as computer-aided design for technical roles, search engine optimisation for marketing roles, and data analysis and programming expertise for analysts and software development roles. We also increasingly see employers asking for baseline digital skills that they expect all employees to have to be able to carry out their role productively and to be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers.

As technological advancement moves towards greater automation and the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning we need to be ready to function within a working world that uses these. We need digital skills to future-proof ourselves in our careers.
