Some students ace their assessment centres, and some don’t. Want to know why?

(Do you want to stand out at your assessment centre?)

If you’re applying for a job nowadays, it is more and more likely that an assessment centre is going to be part of the application process. Employers want to get a full picture of the candidate’s potential, so they ask them to complete a range of tests and tasks – often before they reach the interview stage.

As part of November’s Careers Month, the Careers Service ran a special event at Moulsecoomb on Thursday 23 November to give students a deeper look into these recruiting methods, and to give them strategies for success.

Attendees learned loads of practical tips on video interviews, speed interviewing, CV writing and more. The experts who spoke came from a range of recruiters and agencies, including FDM, PA Consulting and Office Angels, and each had their own valuable take on successful job application.

The speakers had some excellent advice for the students, reassuring them that all these hiring methods are only used when companies are interested in you – they want you to succeed!

Katherine Whittaker, Employment Advisor at the Careers Service, said, “Today has been great – everyone learned a lot. The use of assessment centres and video interviews is becoming more and more widespread, so it’s important for students to really understand them and know how to prepare for them successfully. We at the Careers Service are always developing our knowledge about the trends in graduate recruitment and working with employers so we can pass on up-to-date advice to our students and graduates.”

Don’t worry if you were unable to make it to this event – we’re still here for you. If you need guidance with any aspect of the job application process, including Assessment Centres, we encourage you to get in touch with the Careers Service. You can drop by our location on your campus, ring us on 01273 642855 or send us an email at careers@brighton.ac.uk. You can also learn a lot by visiting the dedicated Assessment Centres pages on our website.
