– An interest in working with community arts/arts education
– An open-minded and hands on approach to art & design
– A willingness to work in an educational setting (gallery or workshop based).
About Photoworks
Photoworks commissions new photography, produces exhibitions and events including the Brighton Photo Biennial (BPB) an international festival of photography, publishes books and an annual magazine. A registered charity, we are hosted by the University of Brighton. Our office is at Edward Street. Brighton Photo Biennial is an international festival of photography that takes place in and around Brighton every two years. BPB 16 takes place this October. Whilst the programme is being kept under wraps until it is announced in July, it will feature new commissions by a range of emerging and established international artists.
The project
Learning & participation is a core activity for Photoworks, and a big part of the BPB programme. Our participatory projects are developed collaboratively and involve small local communities alongside national/international initiatives. For BPB 16 we will be presenting a range of opportunities for people to get involved. As part of this, we are delivering a one-day conference style event for school students called Making it Happen. Up to 90 young people aged 14–18 will come to the Sallis Benney Theatre and hear from inspiring photographers from a range of backgrounds about their work and career paths. Following this, the young people (in small groups) will visit BPB exhibitions in the city and take part in a series of workshops led by student volunteers. These may be critical and purely discussion based, or they could be practical, hands on workshops.
How to apply
Applications from University of Brighton students (including June 2016 graduates) must go through the Active Student Volunteering Service. Please contact us to apply: http://about.brighton.ac.uk/careers/volunteer/contact-active-student/
