The Big Read, Brighton

Working with the Booker Prize Foundation to bring literary fiction to university students

Welcome to the University of Brighton’s Big Read

The University of Brighton is proud to work in association with the Booker Prize Foundation on its scheme to encourage first year students to read contemporary literary fiction.

The university calls this The Big Read, and each year, thanks to the Booker Prize Foundation, first year students are given a free Booker-nominated novel and can join in a range of activities including a visit from the author.

The success of the venture has allowed us to make this an annual event. Eve Smith from the Booker Foundation said:

‘On behalf of the Booker Prize Foundation, we are so pleased at how successfully the project has grown since its inaugural year, especially as it seems to have drawn in many from outside the Literature department, and as you know it is this outreach to other disciplines which the Foundation is seeking to achieve.’

In return and on behalf of all those who’ve benefitted from the scheme, the university extends its warmest thanks to the Booker Prize Foundation.
