Legal Companion Application: Opportunity for First Years

This is an invaluable opportunity open to first year law students, to not only gain legal experience, but also help vulnerable individuals who will be facing the court system alone. This is because since the infamous legal aid cuts, for many it has become almost impossible to gain any form of legal assistance in the court process – This is where the CLOCK Legal Companions are able to help.

As a legal companion, you will be able to help with:

  • Explaining the court process
  • Assisting with courts forms
  • Accompanying litigants into hearings
  • Organising paperwork/court bundles
  • Note taking

Commitment:
Five days training, week commencing 18th September 2017
Minimum 2 hours per week in court

*Throughout this role you will be supported by current legal companions and staff. You will also be trained by a number of partner companies, charities, and law firms.

The selection process:
NO PREVIOUS LEGAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.
To apply please send a CV (one page is fine), and cover letter detailing why you would like to participate. Please send this to Jeanette Ashton at j.c.ashton@brighton.ac.uk

The deadline for applications is 10:00am, Friday 31st March – the last day of term.

For those who are shortlisted, there will be an informal interview after Easter. The date is to be confirmed.

If you have any other questions please email Jeanette Ashton at j.c.ashton@brighton.ac.uk

Good luck on your applications!
