At the School of Business and Law, University of Brighton, we teach, research and consult across the full range of business, management and law disciplines.

Dr Kate Robinson, Dean of the School of Business and Law

Introduction to the Dean of School of Business and Law

As our current and new students join us on campus for the start of the academic year, we wanted to introduce Dr Catherine Robinson – our new Dean for the School of Business and Law.

We caught up with Kate to learn more about her experience before joining the University of Brighton, her vision for the school and advice for all our students.

Previous experience and interests

“Before Brighton, I worked in the Business School at the University of Kent for over 10 years, and was Deputy Dean for 4 years, leading on Accreditations and the Second Campus at Medway.

“I was also a lecturer at Swansea University, and have worked at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) where I’m still a visiting fellow. As an economist, my research focuses on productivity – what makes some firms better than others – and I’ve been especially interested in skills and technology.”

Why Brighton?

“I mean, it’s BRIGHTON! I’m so happy to be here.

“My values are aligned with the institutions – inclusivity, partnership and making a difference. The people here are amazing! The work they do is so impactful and relevant. It’s an absolute privilege. There’s so much potential AND it’s by the seaside.

“I’m really excited about meeting more of our students! I’ve been here for two months now and graduation was AMAZING!”

Your Vision

“Students are at the heart of what we do and for me, that means listening, collaborating and responding to their needs.

“Student needs have evolved over the past 5 years, and we still have some change to embrace to meet these needs, in a challenging landscape. We work closely with our students, the students union and other stakeholders in and beyond the university to understand and develop solutions to meet their needs.

“My vision is for us to be an institution that is bold and embraces innovation and change for a fairer society and to create improved opportunities for our students. This is a reflection of the School’s mission.

Advice for our students

“My advice for all our students would be to make the most of all the opportunities we are able to offer and remember, we are still here after you leave! Always keen to hear what you’re up to !! Maybe even come back to inspire the next cohort…”
