Summary

Come and join an online symposium on creative research methods on Thurs 4th Sept, with Sarah Tremlett (independent artist) and Sandra Houle (University of Ottawa Critical and Creative Practices Lab). All welcome.

The Creative Research Methods Group invite you to join us for another vibrant symposium on creative research methods on Thursday 4th September 2025 14:00-15:30 BST on Microsoft Teams.

This session features:

Sarah Tremlett, independent artist – ‘Healing through Poetic Memoir, Loss and Hybrid Personas – Poet and Poetry Filmmaker Sarah Tremlett and her new publication Horse-Woman’

Sarah will be sharing her new poetic memoir ‘Horse-Woman’ (with paintings from the time), revisiting a turbulent period when she was a fashion model whilst painting and writing and living in a bohemian London bedsit. Hardly spoken to as a child, and given a horse as a companion which was later sold, she writes out the pain held in her body from her upbringing.

Sandra Houle, University of Ottawa, Critical and Creative Practices Lab – ‘Gods, Dragons, and Graduate School: An Arts-Based Inquiry into the Social Experiences of International Students in Canadian Higher Education’

Sandra will discuss a study that used arts-based methods, including collage and poetry, to explore the experiences of eight international graduate students at a Canadian higher education institution. Through a visual-textual analysis, she examined how these students navigate, mobilize, and experience their social ties and networks within the academic and community context.

The group is supported by the Centre for Arts and Wellbeing. It is open to all who share our passion for creative methods and our desire to provide a supportive, stimulating space within which to explore these. No advance sign-up is required; just turn up on the day if you wish to join us.
