Centre for Arts and Wellbeing: Arts-Based Research in Healthcare
On the 8th of May, 11 faculty and PhD students from BSMS participated in an event at The Waste House at the School of Art and Media. This was hosted by the Centre for Arts and Wellbeing (CAW) and organised by Muna Al-Jawad- Associate Professor in Medical Education, who has a PhD in Comics-based research and leads the Art, Illness and Healthcare theme in the CAW.
Participants were treated to a tour of the Waste House by CAW co-director Nick Gant, which is in the process of being rewilded for its 10th Anniversary. Philippa Lyon encouraged the use of drawing as research (pictures of some participants’ work on the theme of “a memory of hospital” is shown). Bethan Prosser explored deep listening as a research method, incorporating experience of this method around the Grand Parade campus and surroundings.

We planned future events examining the analysis of data generated by arts-based methods, networking among CAW members to encourage partnership on projects and tackling the place of arts-based methods in the perceived hierarchy of research at BSMS.
