Writers Retreat to Go Forwards!!!

This September, ten Centre members enjoyed a relaxing and productive writing retreat at the idyllic setting of Dean’s Place Hotel, Alfriston, East Sussex.  By escaping some of the pressures of preparing for the start of the new academic year, for three days members were able to concentrate on their watery research by drafting or completing journal papers, and preparing grant applications.

Our newest Centre member, Dr Lorna Linch, summed it up: “It was really great to get away and find some head space to think about research and to write, and to also be in an environment with other academics. The venue was amazing, especially our working room, which was very peaceful and calming – precisely what you need when you are trying to write. It’s the little things too, that help with a retreat like this – for example, the fact that we didn’t have to take time out of our day to prepare our own lunch (which was a highlight, and great food!), leaving us with more time to focus on our work. And what better way to have a research meeting than in the swimming pool? Which by the way, I actually did.”

It was great to catch up with colleagues and even meet new ones during the retreat. It has been very fruitful for my writing and hopefully I’ll finish my first draft on sedimentary records in Krabi’s mangroves soon. I recommend very highly the retreat to everyone for the same reasons as Lorna. Thank you very much for the opportunity and a special thanks to Suzi for organising it.

I had such a good time at the writers retreat and got a chance to meet some lovely new people and talk to others I recognised face to face, at last! Getting an opportunity to discuss a chapter of my PhD research with my supervisor without my day job getting in the way was the highlight of my time for sure. Write up of my second paper is well and truly underway and that’s thanks to having a chance to break away from every day’s routine and the same-old setting. Thank you ever so much Suzy for organising this special event and include me too!
