I looked first at Frank Frazetta, often called the ‘Godfather’ of fantasy comic art. Frazetta worked with oils, but because he wanted to create work quickly, he would use strong colours blocked in to enhance a composition, as in coloured skies and moons. This blocking of colour was something

that I wanted to try, as I realised that by creating over 20 pages, I would need to use a colour technique that was relatively fast – so although I was colouring digitally, the blocking was a useful device. He subject matter, fantasy, was also a clear influence.
