About

This body of work concerns the overlooked, through exploring ideas of past and present moments in familiar and unfamiliar spaces both physical and mental. Influenced by my everyday experience we travel from the ordinary under the lens of vulnerability in night-time scenes to the intrusive marks of shadows that fall in our own homes. Alongside the questioning of photographs and oral recollections of childhood and adolescence I group together the overlooked and forgotten.

Falling alongside themes of my contemporaries such as Minyoung Choi and Caroline Walker I tackle nostalgia with anxiousness, and the everyday with sensitivity, as I recognise the fragility in our routine.

Through cropped compositions I capture fleeting moments of the ordinary, moments that are routine but when taking the time to notice become unfamiliar. The self-consciousness involved in taking these images shines through intimate scale oil works of the lights that follow us in urban landscape.

Journeying from the outside in. Stale corners of our homes become marked. Cold shadows project onto us, falling and rising, imprisoning us in our own private spaces. These banal sections of space become something of beauty and change. Comfort comes over time when we learn their intricacies. There are moments in these marks even though they are moving, changing moments in and of themselves, we recognise and learn their behaviour.

Stemming from my own experience of looking through old photo albums. Ideas of memories come flooding back. Stories of a past time, in vague recollection, play in our heads. We remember lucid colours of childhood and question their sincerity; are these stories I’ve built over time? Photos replay, like switching on a video, scenes repeat, glitching and overexposed. Is this from my unconscious or has this photograph made a memory fact? Are these memories mine?
