Pull Up A Chair, 2021, School Chairs on Aluminium, 145cm x 120cm x 88cm

Around and about lie run down places; homes, shops and pubs, their existence slowly being erased until they arrive at their inevitable final closure. But what happens to me next is mystifying. I feel a sense of reminiscence. Missing these grotty old places for the strange charm they possess, as they inescapably become gentrified and chic, replaced by modern floor plans and harsh monochromatic colour schemes. No longer will I see the regulars at the clapped-out pub or the nice woman at the newsagent who would never ID me when I bought a pack of cigarettes. The charm I feel these places possessed and the feeling of loss experienced after they vanish is the core of my practice today.

This practice conveys the notion of ‘ugly endearment’, that these aforementioned places have an intrinsic beauty and may resonate with people on a similar level to responding to the conventionally aesthetically desirable. Protruding objects from the wall and floor spaces force works to be confronted, bringing those viewing into a dialogue with the pieces. To emphasise this encroachment of space, objects and materials such as school chairs, watering cans, boots and old chandeliers are incorporated into the works. This reflects simultaneously the “ugly” aspects and physical interaction, further enabling the viewer to identify with their own experiences.
