Trainee sports reporters gain exclusive insight from President of Sports Journalists Association, Darren Lewis

BA and MA Sports Journalism courses were given a unique opportunity to learn from two leading figures in sports media during an exclusive guest speaker event.

Organised by Channel 4 sports news correspondent and visiting lecturer Jordan Jarrett-Bryan, the session featured Darren Lewis, Assistant Editor at the Daily Mirror and President of the Sports Journalists’ Association.

The discussion provided students with insights on key topics such as breaking into the sports media industry, the importance of improving diversity in sports journalism, and mastering multimedia skills for modern reporting.

Lewis shared his vast experience in the field, offering practical advice and real-world examples to inspire the next generation of sports journalists.

Annabel Bassett, first-year BA Sport Journalism student, said: “I did my research about Darren Lewis’ career and his several roles in the industry, and realised he works for Sky Sports and TalkSPORT.

“It was great to receive some invaluable advice from Darren, including how we should be producing journalism daily if we are serious about becoming sports journalists.”

Adam Powley, BA Sport Journalism course leader, said “We were delighted to welcome Darren Lewis to the University of Brighton. As a leading professional in the industry, Darren provided expert insight based on years of top-level experience to inform and engage with our Sports Journalism students.

“This was the latest in our extensive guest-speaker masterclass programme, providing students with practical advice to help them with their studies and employment pathways.”
