Graduates 2022: Meg Ryan: Fine Art: Sculpture

“I have found my time at Brighton amazing; its an incredibly special place and I’ve found it attracts a very friendly and kind collection of people.”

Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences

I am a multi-disciplinary artist who enjoys working with time and element sensitive materials.

My current work draws on autobiographical and life experiences, related to personal journeys which most people go through at some point in their lives. I enjoy playing with materials, textures and colours, and seeing how they can make an audience member feel.

How have you found your course and time at Brighton?

I have found my time at Brighton amazing; its an incredibly special place and I’ve found it attracts a very friendly and kind collection of people. Brighton uni itself is an amazing hub for creatives and having such a friendly collection of artists directly around me the past three years has really made it. My course has been a extraordinary experience. Despite COVID 19 and lock-downs I feel as though I’ve come out the end of it having explored many mediums and techniques, and I will continue to think and talk about art in a way that my degree has taught me to.

How did you choose your course – why did you choose to study Fine Art?

I originally was on the 3D Design and Craft course, but after the first term I realized I am much more of a fine artist than a designer. Fine Art Sculpture appealed to me through the vast range of mediums and techniques the students were using, and how different everyone’s work was from the next. Also, the chance to take part in crits and wips with fellow pupils regularly. Having in depth conversations about work and really pulling it apart what the physicality of something meant, without a superior complex that sometimes others speak about art work.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I’m planning on returning home to Wales for a short period of time and to continue to develop my practice in life casting and working with wax. I am also planning on going travelling which will hopefully have me meet more creative people from around the world, and expand my knowledge further.
