Graduates 2022: Lauren Rowell: Textiles

“The tutors and technicians are so helpful, and full of knowledge, I couldn’t have wished for anything more!!”

“My work is energetic, playful, and colourful! My final major project was all about things that bring people joy, and my primary research stemmed from looking back at old childhood pictures and taking inspiration from them. This then inspired my knitting in the form of lots of bright colours, textures and gingham!

To me, it is very important that the things you surround yourself with things that make you feel happy, and I wanted my work to make me, and others feel happy. I am influenced by so many things, from designers such as Molly Goddard and MuiMui, artists such as Grayson Perry, and High Street brands like Lazy Oaf. Anything that makes me feel joy, I’ll take inspiration from!!

How have you found your course and time at Brighton?

My time at Brighton has truly been the best time I could’ve ever wished for, and I have changed so much and grown over these 4 years! The course is just wonderful, and as you pick your specialism so early, it allows for you to really master your chosen subject. The tutors and technicians are so helpful, and full of knowledge, I couldn’t have wished for anything more!!

How did you choose your course – why did you choose to study Textiles?

I chose to study Textiles because I find it so fascinating how textiles plays a part in everyone’s life, whether you realise it or not! I’ve always been more into the creative side of life, and textiles has truly allowed me to express myself and this creativity. Before coming to university, I had only studied print, I’d never even knitted before! But as soon as I did the knitting rotation, I knew it was for me, I love the textures and how playful and fun it can be. The tutors were amazing at not letting the fact I hadn’t knitted before putting me off! They truly encouraged me to give it my best shot!

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I hope to stay in Brighton and make and sell my own knitted clothes. Luckily, I’ve had some interest already and I’m hoping this will continue!! If this doesn’t work out though, I’d be happy in any job related to knitting! I can’t imagine a day going by where I don’t do it now!
